A beautiful Greek Orthodox icon of St. Matthew the Evangelist, handmade & hand painted by an expert Greek hagiographer.

St. Matthew, one of the twelve Apostles, is the author of the first Gospel. He was the son of Alpheus and was called to be an Apostle while sitting in the tax collectors place at Capernaum. According to the New Testament, he was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and the Ascension.His feast day is celebrated on 21 September in the West and 16 November in the East.

Made using traditional materials (selected aged timber frames, egg tempera, 24K gold leaf, natural powder paint and varnishes) and old techniques, this icon is an exact reproduction of an antique Byzantine masterpiece.

The icon bears the artist’s signature on the front and the seal of authenticity on the back.
